In septic T cells, VDAC1 oligomers open a pore that leaks mtDNA and drives inflammation — and VBIT-12 shuts it down

Here's the kind of paper that keeps me hooked. A group at Shanghai Children's Hospital (Shanghai Jiao Tong University), led by Yiping Zhou, was digging into why sepsis makes immune cells go haywire. They hit mouse T cells with bacterial toxin and basically filmed the disaster in slow motion: the mitochondria got stressed, VDAC1 molecules clumped together on the outer membrane, and mitochondrial DNA started leaking out into the cell — where the cGAS–STING sensor mistook it for an invader and cranked up inflammation.

The kicker is the fix. When they blocked VDAC1 from clumping with VBIT-12 — one of the oligomerization inhibitors I keep going on about — the mtDNA stopped leaking and the inflammatory signalling settled right back down. It's another brick in the wall of "stop the pore, calm the fire," this time in T-cell immunity.
